Costa Rica Surf Trip
Playa Grande, Costa Rica
November 14-21, 2009

Now
you have a choice of locations when you want to surf in Costa Rica with
the Outdoor Adventure Club! In addition to our camp in Malpais in the
spring, we now have this camp farther north, near (but not in)
Tamarindo.
If you've been surfing with us in Bolinas all summer, this is the payoff. 80° water, lots of sunshine, and great waves for all skill levels and a great place to spend a week on vacation.
Like
the surf camp in Malpais, you'll be well taken care of here. We have
surf lessons every day, yoga practice, a one hour massage, and the
option to explore national parks, the local nightlife, or just chill
and watch the sunset.
Your Costa Rica vacation includes:

Learning to surf:
Daily surf
lessons are a big part of the trip. With a small group, and great
instructors, you'll have a great experience. Everyone can advance their
skills on this trip. Beginners will learn the basics to get in the surf
with confidence. You'll learn about ocean safety, waves, equipment,
paddling, standing up, etiquette, and more.
Intermediate and advanced surfers will work on things like duck diving, turning, accelerating and other maneuvers.
When you're not surfing:
There is so much to do in the area, even a non-surfer could keep busy.
Playa Grande, where we stay, is one of 3 nesting sites for the giant
Leatherback turtles. We'll be there during the nesting season for these
amazing and endangered animals. As an option, you can join a guide to
watch these giants as they come up onto the beach at night to lay their
eggs. It's an amazing thing to witness first hand.
Diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, sunset sailing trips and sport fishing can all be arranged as well.
And it wouldn't be Costa Rica without a zipline canopy tour, too.

Accommodations:
The
OAC is taking over a small, 8 unit hotel that was built recently and is
very comfortable. This location will give us a feeling that we are at
home in Playa Grande. Our accommodations are right across from
the beach.
Why are we not staying right on the beach?
As
surfers we love the beach, but so do the Leatherback Turtles, which
have been nesting here since the age of the dinosaurs. Although staying
on the beach in Playa Grande sounds like the way to go, the OAC
constantly strives to limit our impact on the fragile eco-systems that
we visit. As we said above, the nearly extinct Leatherback turtles nest
here at Playa Grande. Beach front development is threatening one of the
few places that the endangered Leatherbacks can nest and breed. So it
is our choice to move just a few minutes walk off the beach to help the
species continue to live on.
Travel information:
You
have two options, you can fly into Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) directly
from the U.S., or you can fly into San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) and take
a domestic flight to Tamarindo. We strongly recommend flying into
Liberia. It avoids the time and expense of a connecting flight, it's
faster, and there are no surfboard size restrictions on the
international flights. On the domestic flight, you can only bring
boards under 7'.
