Introduction to Summer (Snow) Mountaineering on Lassen Peak

June 12-13, 2010

Register for this trip here!

mountaineering tripThe logical extension of trail hiking and high-country backpacking, mountaineering can take you to wild, high locales. During this "learn-as-you-play" weekend the OAC's experienced climbing guides will introduce to you the skills necessary to travel with greater safety through California'ssummer mountains, dealing with steep snowfields, off-trail navigation, and high altitudes. The entire clinic will be held on Lassen Peak, theworld's largest dacite plug type volcano. We will walk (well, more literally, climb) through a safe, proven progression of skill-development lessonsand drills.

Topics covered will include:

  • use of crampons
  • use of ice axe
  • self-arrest
  • snow anchors
  • snow belay techniques
  • route finding
  • navigation on snow
  • basic avalanche awareness
  • and most importantly, the decision making process necessary for safe mountain travel

Even in mid-summer, Lassen Peak provides a snowy wilderness of spectacular mountain terrain. We'll rise at our car-side campsite early each day, appreciating the need for this "alpine start" more and more as the weekend progresses. We will hike into our "classroom" for the day and begin learning. One of the days we will attempt to climb to the summit of Lassen Peak, our day, time and route dictated by weather and mountain conditions.

Mountaineering requires a bit of specialized equipment. We are available to discuss your gear selection and can also rent a limited amount of supplies. Before the trip you'll need to secure, either on your own or through us, the following:

  • Crampon compatible "mountain boots", either leather or plastic
  • Crampons that are adjusted for your boots
  • Ice Axe
  • Avalanche Beacon
  • Climbing Harness
  • Belay device and Carabiner
  • Climbing Helmet

Feel free to schedule a time to meet with us at Lombardi Sports if you would like to discuss the adequacy of your gear. Recommended prior experience is backpacking over mountainous trails and a relatively high level of fitness.
