Hike the Palisades in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park

May 27, 2012

Hiking the Palisades neat Mt. St. Helena with the Outdoor Adventure ClubHike the entire length of the Palisades, west to east!

This moderate to strenuous hike has it all: breathtaking views of the Wine Country, Bay Area and Sierra Nevada from the flanks of Mt St. Helena; epic rock spires and pinnacles, high cliffs, hardened crags and natural amphitheaters; several seasonal waterfalls and volcanic rock grottos; and of course a challenge. We'll explore local landmarks such as The Turret, Table Rock, and Duff Peak.

This out and back hike is roughly 12 miles with lots of ups and downs: we'll ascend 400 feet in the first mile, only to plunge back down 600 feet over the second mile, and the trend only continues. Once we pass the moonscape summit of Table Rock, we continue on a well-engineered trail with gradual grades and stairs. In all, there's about a 3500' difference in elevation each way. Winter and early Spring are the perfect seasons to avoid the heat normally encountered on this hike during the summer, and the creeks and waterfalls should be running. You should be in good hiking shape to take on the Palisades, but the stunning views along the way make for an incredible workout. Expect this to be a full day on the trail!

Along the way, your Outdoor Adventure Club guide will show you the way, keep the conversation going, and serve up a delicious OAC lunch!

Meet new friends, explore the trails with experienced guides and make this weekend count.
