Hike to Barnabe Peak in Samuel P. Taylor Park

March 20, 2010

Hike in Marin viewAt Samuel P. Taylor State Park, a mountaintop vista rewards those who like hills.

Our hike today will be a six-mile loop hike includes a 1,300-foot climb to Barnabe Peak (1,466 feet high). On clear days, The top of Barnabe Peak provides spectacular views of the western foothills and the Marin coast.

Along the way, we'll visit Stairstep Falls. If we're lucky, we'll have heavy rain boefore our hike, bringing the waterfall to life.

The hike starts amid low, shaded redwood groves with running creeks and ferns, and climbs to open grasslands with stunning views of Marin.

The wildlife in the area ranges from newts to skunks, foxes and deer. Silver salmon and steekhead trout use creeks in the area to spawn, too.

If the weather is clear, you can enjoy views from Barnabe Peak that span from Mount Tamalpais to Tomales Bay to Point Reyes. The top also provides a great place for a delicious Outdoor Adventure Club lunch.
