Hollow Tree and Meteor Trail Hike in Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Hiking in Big Basin with the Outdoor Adventure Club Join us a this beautiful 8-mile hike that takes us through redwood filled ravines in Big Basin State Park via the scenic Hollow Tree and Meteor Trails.

This loop extends from the visitor's center to the northern extent of Big Basin's old growth redwoods. Almost the entire route passes through remarkably dense old-growth redwood and tanoak forest looking like a solid and very tall wall of greenery. Much of it follows along rushing Opal Creek and several large trees alongside the trail have been hollowed out by fire, hence the name of one of the trails.

Although much of the hike contains gentle ups and downs, there are a few steep climbs and descents so some moderate hiking experience is required for this trip.

Along the way your Outdoor Adventure Club guide will show you the way, keep the conversation going, and serve up a great OAC lunch on the trail.

You'll need to bring:
A recommended gear list will come with your confirmed reservation, but you should generally be prepared with the following:

Clothes appropriate for the weather (avoid wearing cotton)
Appropriate footwear
2 liters of water
A small daypack to hold your water and spare clothing layers
State Park entrance fee per vehicle $10 (carpool!)
