Hike to Maple Falls in Nisene Marks State Park near Santa Cruz
April 1 and September 23, 2012
An OAC guide claims this hike to be the "single most beautiful Redwoods hike" he's ever done!
The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park is a beautiful yet often overlooked forest of second growth redwoods nestled in the Coast Range by Aptos. The park is an inspiration: after decades after clear cut logging operations, Nisene Marks State Park has rebounded into the lush forests which comprise this hidden Bay Area gem. Few casual observers know that one of the largest state parks in California is home to one of the least visited waterfalls in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Maple Falls. We’ll explore the geological history and logging relics of the park, as well as admire the coast redwoods and 40 foot tall falls on this challenging adventure.
This 9-mile, moderate loop is at times strenuous, with almost 1,000 feet of elevation gain in the first 3 miles. The last 6 miles are mostly downhill, with the occasional ups and downs just to keep things interesting. You should be in good hiking shape and be prepared for the occasional stream crossing.
The weather here can vary from cool to hot within a few hours so layered clothing is advised.
Be prepared for a full day of hiking with the Outdoor Adventure Club. We’ll meet at the trailhead at 9:30 AM and expect to be finished by 5:30 PM.

You'll need to bring:
A recommended gear list will come with your confirmed reservation, but you should generally be prepared with the following:
- Clothes appropriate for the weather (avoid wearing cotton)
- Appropriate footwear
- 2 liters of water
- A small daypack to hold your water and spare clothing layers
- Sunscreen
- State Park entrance fee per vehicle $8 (carpool!)
