Kayak Tour of Elkhorn Slough Wetlands near Santa Cruz
June 8 and September 6, 2014
Elkhorn Slough (pronounced "slew") is one of California's largest and last wetlands. The slough is located at Moss Landing, south of Santa Cruz in the heart of the Monterey Bay. Birds, seals, otters, fish and other creatures inhabit the twisting channels of this inland sea. The Elkhorn Slough is also home for sea lions, harbor seals, and has the highest concentration of southern sea otters on the California coast. More than 200 different bird species use the slough as a resting spot during their annual migration.
If the conditions permit, in addition to paddling in the slough, we will be able to paddle into Monterey Bay to explore the sandy shoreline and look for whales, dolphins and other sea creatures!
The kayaking in the slough is well protected from open ocean swells, making this trip great for novice paddlers as well as more experienced paddlers who want to view wildlife from a kayak's perspective.
We will start the Elkhorn Slough trip at the back end at Kirby Park, unlike other tours. Thist is a great way to eplore the entire slough, with a nice, long sail on the way back if the winds permits. Yes, you can use a hand held sail to help your kayak glide. Usually the winds pick around lunch time. It’s really cool!
Also, we will paddle until we reach the ocean and if conditions permit, head out onto the bay in search of whales and dolphins. As with all Outdoor Adventure Club trips, we will assess the conditions of the day to take full advantage of what Mother Nature gives us.
This trip will begin in the morning and end around mid to late afternoon. Limited to 14 people, so sign up early. All levels are welcome!
