Ocean and Marsh Kayak Tour of Elkhorn Slough Wetlands near Santa Cruz

February 11, 2012

kayaking tripElkhorn Slough (pronounced "slew") is one of California's largest and last wetlands. The slough is located at Moss Landing, south of Santa Cruz in the heart of the Monterey Bay. Birds, seals, otters, fish and other creatures inhabit the twisting channels of this inland sea. If the conditions permit, in addition to paddling in the slough, we will be able to paddle into Monterey Bay to explore the sandy shoreline and look for whales, dolphins and other sea creatures!

The Trip:

We will launch from Moss Landing and paddle until we reach the ocean and if conditions permit, head out onto the bay in search of whales and Kayaking with otters in Elkhorn Sloughdolphins. This is the time of year when California Grey whales are migrating up the coastline. Then we will tour the Elkhorn Slough. The kayaking in the slough is well protected from open ocean swells, making it great for paddlers who want to view wildlife from a kayak's perspective. If winds permit, we will finish with a nice, long sail on the way back. Yes, you can use a hand held sail to help your kayak glide. It’s really cool!

As with all Outdoor Adventure Club trips, we will assess the conditions of the day to take full advantage of what Mother Nature gives us.

This trip will begin at 10:00am at Moss Landing and is limited to 14 people, so sign up early. All levels are welcome!
