Raft the Upper Sacramento River, 2 days (Class III-IV)

June 5-6, 2010

rafitng on the Upper Sacramento riverWith so many AWESOME rafting trips planned for the spring and summer, we thought we'd give you as many options as possible, so we've brought back a classic, The Upper Sacramento!

Located conveniently near Interstate 5 and only a half hour north of Redding, the Upper Sacramento offers three stretches of whitewater excellence for the beginner to the advanced rafter. From its headwaters near majestic Mt. Shasta, the Sacramento cascades through the historic town of Dunsmuir continuing on for spectacular views of the Castle Crags & Mt. Shasta. Through this beautiful and unique canyon with its side creek waterfalls, wildflowers, and lush forests you'll encounter over 45 action packed rapids. This river is fast paced with excitement around every bend. If you're looking for loads of fun and adventure, the Upper Sacramento is a perfect start to the season.

The Upper Sacramento has also gained recognition as a blue ribbon trout stream. So, those who want to fish while at camp, bring your license and your gear!

The Trip:
Day One: We will meet and prepare for our river voyage. PFDs (personal flotation devices) will be fitted, all gear will be packed in dry bags (provided), and a river safety and equipment lesson will be given. After this orientation we will board the rafts and head down river for the next two days. The action begins immediately with virtually nonstop Class III rapids. After a few miles, we will take a break from the whitewater and enjoy some of the beautiful scenery and a hearty relaxed buffet lunch. We will take our time and enjoy some water play and a side hike or two. The second half of the day holds many more exciting rapids including the Class IV "White Horse" (guests have the option to walk around). In our riverside camp the guides will set up kitchen and begin preparing a decadent meal. While in camp you can choose your sleeping site, fish, swim, play or just relax. The evening meal will be followed by dessert, campfire entertainment, and a peaceful night's sleep under the stars.

Day Two: In the morning the wonderful smell of coffee and breakfast will greet your senses. We will re-pack our gear and get ready for another exciting day on the river. This day includes more terrific whitewater and the infamous "Muirs Creek" a Class IV drop. We will feast on another hearty lunch at a riverside sandy beach and continue down the final stretch of the river. When we reach the take-out our vehicle and ice cold drinks (or hot chocolate) will be waiting.

OAC recommends drivng up on Friday night, and staying at a cheap motel in Redding Friday night. If everyone signs up early, we can get a group rate somewhere and stay together.
