About Consumnes River Gorge Climbing Area:
If you are dreaming of climbing the walls of the High Sierra, in places like Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park and Yosemite Valley, you need to be able to climb granite cracks. And the best place to learn to climb granite cracks (with the safety of a top rope) is at Consumnes. This climbing area consists of face climbing, crack climbing, Yosemite-style and quality granite, and climbs that are about 30-40 feet high.
Consumnes River Gorge climbing area is about 20 minutes south of Placerville off Hwy. 50. The climbs overlook the Consumnes River where you can take a refreshing swim between climbs.
Beginners:
First timers will be introduced to rock climbing in this great outdoor environment. Everyone will learn and review the basic safety procedures before they get on the wall. This is a "Learn As You Play" adventure for everyone. Our guides will cover equipment, terminology, safety, basic anchoring and footwork. There’s nothing like rock climbing to give you a sense of challenge. You'll have the opportunity to learn a skill as you challenge yourself to face your fears, and push yourself to accomplish things you thought were impossible!
Beyond Beginner and Advanced Climbers:
The guides of the Outdoor Adventure Club have been safely leading trips to Consumnes for over ten years. We'll set up climbs and work with you on technique to help you push through the challenges of climbing on granite.
Indoor climbers, you'll enjoy getting out of the gym and on to real rock! Consumnes River Gorge offers remote and incredible beautiful climbing in the 5.6-5.12+ levels. Plus, this is one of the best places anywhere to practice crack climbing techniques with a top rope. Everything from finger cracks to off-widths. Everyone gets on the walls and climbs, climbs, climbs!
OAC climbing guides do more than just set top ropes. They coach you, encourage you when you need it, encourage you more when you want it, and help you develop better climbing technique. The Outdoor Adventure Club guides are professional and approachable. They want to see you having fun doing what they love to do!
When you climb with the Outdoor Adventure Club, you climb all day. When you can't climb anymore (or if the sun sets), we'll all head into town for an icy cold beverage and pizza or Thai food for dinner (not included). After dinner on Saturday evening, we head back to camp to relax and enjoy campfire socializing.
The Outdoor Adventure Club will provide the camping after your climbs. Your climbing guide during the day will be your campfire neighbor in the evening. Share stories and climbing goals with your OAC climbing friends while our staff fills you with scrumptious breakfasts in the morning and keeps you entertained at night.
Itinerary for the Weekend:
Arrive at our camp in Placerville any time after 6 pm on Friday night. Relax and unwind. You can set up a tent or sleep under the
stars. It is quite comfortable for either option.
On Saturday, awake to the smell of hot fresh-pressed coffee, breakfast provided by OAC staff, and get ready to leave the camp bright and early. Because of the summer heat, it's always good to get an early start on the day. We'll stop at the market in Placerville in case anyone needs to pick up a sandwich for lunch. Make sure you pack a swimsuit as it gets warm on the rock, and the swimming hole is right there! We'll spend a full day climbing on the granite cracks and faces at Consumnes! Dinner is on the way back to camp as we stop in town for a cold beverage and a hot bite to eat. This will give everyone a longer climbing day, and an earlier dinner, rather than going back to camp to cook. Then it is back to camp for a night at the campfire.
On Sunday, we'll have another breakfast at camp, followed by packing up and heading out for another full day of climbing.
Why climb with OAC?
Outdoor Adventure Club climbing guides are professional. Just because someone knows how to climb, does not mean that they are the best instructors, or the safest. Besides being passionate climbers in their personal lives, our guides have been trained by the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA), the leading authority for guiding instruction in the United States. Our guides' focus is not only on taking you out and letting you climb, but setting up the safest climbing situations, and teaching you in a very patient, supportive and friendly manner. They are also trained in advanced wilderness first aid. Besides safety, they are knowledgeable of the climbing scene, and eager to help you develop your climbing portfolio.
